What is a Chakra and why should I care?

When your chakras are in alignment your ability to have the elements in your life that make you successful, productive, and content are greatly enhanced. When they are out of alignment your life can be well…pretty rough.

Let me tell you my story of how I discovered this to be true.

Two years ago my intuition sucker punched me.
An Aussie friend was talking about a class she wanted to take called Chakradance. I didn’t have a clue what a chakra was, I get nervous dancing in front of people so the normal thing would have been just to listen to her nod my head and support her on her journey. But nope. My gut started churning and I got that excited buzzy feeling that in my experience comes from some where outside linking to something inside of me that will poke me until I pay attention. There was something here. Something powerful and important. I needed to find out more.
So I looked for a class in Wellington. Nope. Not one teacher was here. I would have to travel to Auckland to take the course or the other option was to shell out a lot of money and become an instructor by taking a distance education course. It made no sense. Financially the 2k required could be used for so many other things. But the prodding wouldn’t stop. When this happens I have learned to remove logic from the situation and as Steven Pressfield urges…stay stupid…don’t think…act.

I paid for the course. I got around the whole irrationality of it by rationalizing that I could do it in the morning and it would kill two birds with one stone. I could meditate and exercise at the same time. What I didn’t realize is that it would give me a mainline directly to my Muse. As I began to learn about the chakras and bring mine into greater alignment I started getting visions during the dances. Images that I could create that would tell stories and help others to understand what I was learning about. Images that would pull me into an entirely new direction in my art. Out of my shadow work and right smack bang into my purpose for being.

So Why should you care?

When you are out of alignment you tend to pursue the things that are not really your souls calling. Again referencing Steven Pressfield – shadow careers. These careers are ones that work along side what your really should be doing but they don’t put you fully out there to fight in the arena of your hearts desire. Nope they keep you safe. For me strangely enough the U.S. military did that. I had a scholarship out of high school to be a classical cellist but I was afraid of starving as an artist and never being as good as YoYo Ma. So I sold my cello and joined the military instead because they would feed me and educate me and make my family happy that I was getting a university education. Ultimately I trained to be a nurse. But I was always an artist and heart and scared silly of doing it. So when I was on late night guard duties I would bring along paints and paint watercolours in between my rounds of securing the building. Drawing and sketching as I had done when I was little. The clues were there but I was mightily out of chakral alignment and couldn’t rustle up the courage to do anything for real. So I painted and gave them away. I photographed and gave them away. Putting very little value on what I was creating. Seeing the gap in my skills between the professionals and my amateur self I though I was delusional. Then I had a child and my art dreams fizzled even more in the wake of that level of responsibility. I became more and more out of balance with my souls purpose but I was picking up skills along the way that would ultimately help me in my journey to soulful work.

So Chakras. I haven’t really gotten to the point right. What are they and why should you care?

The word chakra is a Sanskrit term which means wheel, circle, point. It comes from Ayruvedic and Hinduism and refers to at least seven centres of spiritual energy in the body, according to Ayurveda philosophy. Essentially the chakras are a map.
An internal map that lets you see where your life is or is not in balance.

The Base Chakra

The Base Chakra is all about safety and security and your right to be present on this earth. If you had a wobbly time with your birth family. This one is probably a bit wonky. You bring that misalignment into future relationships because you know no other way. Think of it like a washing machine that is evenly weighted. When it spins around it is balanced and the momentum keeps things going and working as they should. When you have stuffed it full of extra blankets and towels and they the wadded up in a corner the whole thing starts shaking and wobbling and eventually stops working.
Our Chakras are like that. The more out of alignment they are the more chaos they bring into our lives. If we only know chaos this is what feels comfortable so we bring in more chaos. With the base chakra this is doing things like spending money we don’t have and going into deep debt. Getting into a relationship with someone who doesn’t have our back and tends to undermine us instead of supporting us.
Our Base Chakra is our Root Chakra. It ties you to mother earth. It appears at the moment that globally we have a wobbly Root chakra. We are rapidly killing our planet thus creating a situation where we are unable to safely exist as a species. On a personal level it is putting junk food and food that tastes nice but has minimal nutrient value into your body as fuel. Not exercising, or abusively exercising and refusing to work your body in a way that honours and strengthens it. It is standing in front of a mirror and hating what you see and sending hateful thoughts at yourself.
The base chakra is your ability to physically take care of yourself and be kind and loving to yourself and others. When you are in alignment you have a strong ties to your past. You have forgiven that which has harmed you and have grown in strength and power. It is the base for all of the other chakras. It is also the chakra that manifests your material comforts. It requires grounding and depth.

The Sacral Chakra

This is your area of sensuality. The taste and pleasures you get in life. Ultimately your ability to be fully present in the moment. Not living in the future or the past but in the delicious present with all of its peaks and troughs. When you are balanced in this chakra you are a sensual being. Touching and lingering in all that is delicious. You feel emotions deep and strong and are not overwhelmed by them but allow them to wash over you and then release them just as easily as they have come. You are empathetic and present for people. You are deeply, deeply present. When this chakra is out of alignment it manifests in checking out of the emotional slipstream of life. This usually manifests as addictions. Anything that can be done to numb yourself. To hide from the power of truly feeling the present moment.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra is your gut. It is your Mana, your personal power. When your third chakra is aligned you are like a samurai. You do not act unless required but when you are required to right a wrong or correct an imbalance you do so judiciously and powerfully. When your solar plexus is weak you are a victim and attract victimizers to you. When it is in excess you are a tyrant…a right dick. You use your power to victimize and get caught in an endless dance of shame. The solar plexus is represented by fire. It is also the one that takes form from the grounding earthed solidity of the base moves you past the emotion from the sacral and applies the fire of action. This is the chakra that moves you from wistful dreaming of what you could do to actually getting your shit together and doing it. This is the chakra that moves you from critic to a warrior in the ring doing your hearts desire not just living a shadow life in a shadow career. This is the chakra of courage, mastery, and preparation.

The Heart Chakra

This is the chakra that allows you to forgive that which is restraining you and holding you back. It is the chakra that is involved in universal love. The sacral chakra is sensual emotive love where this is global love. Love for the human race. Love for the animals of the Earth. Love for the Earth. Love for the universe as a whole. Love for yourself as well. When you operate from this chakra you are able to see people as they are with no judgment. This doesn’t mean you let people walk all over you…hopefully your solar plexus is sorting that out for you. But you are able to be open, compassionate, and expansive. You assume nothing. You take people as they are in their core…not the shadow selves they are trying hard to project on to the world. When this chakra is out of alignment you can end up a hater. Someone who sees the negative in everyone. You become disenchanted with humanity, with yourself. If you have this chakra in excess you become a martyr…seeking your love and approval in the over service of others to the detriment of yourself. Ultimately this is a chakra of respect. Respect for yourself and respect for life.

The Throat Chakra

This is the chakra of communication. How are you seen and heard in the world. When you have hit the harmonic of your true calling of your life’s purpose you will cause people to resonate just by being around you. When you talk people will listen. You are able to clearly articulate the message of your higher calling. If this chakra is out of alignment and diminished energy is present you will become the silent child, summarily ignored and progress blocked because of your inability to communicate what is necessary for your further evolution. If it is in excess you talk too much. The things you say don’t drip from your heart. They can be cruel and painful. You could be a gossip stinging and hurting and causing people to become incredibly guarded around you or you could become a bore forcing people to tune out to your unfiltered mind farts. My favorite treatise on this concept is from a book called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. One of the agreements is to be meticulous with your word. Chose them carefully and first do no harm to yourself or others. There is magic in words. Deep ancient magic. Be careful to chose not to use black magic with your words.

The Third Eye Chakra

This Chakra relates to your ability to see that which is not yet real. This is the land of Artists and Einsteins. This is the land of your dreams, visions, and possibilities. It is the screen that lights up when you close your eyes and starts playing infinitely possible realities from the soup that is the ether. Often the contents are completely covered by monkey mind…that endless critical chatter of Resistance. But on clearing all of that mess away you can begin to find the gems of your true visionary self. You were brought to this earth to tap your unique visions and manifest them. To effectively do so you need to be in alignment and have your pathway reasonably clear straight down to your base chakra. This is the land of your imagination. Of your creativity. This is the space where your Muses and you can sit down for a steaming cuppa and mind map out your infinite possible futures and decide on a course for your life that will bring the most amount of meaning and goodness to the world. When your third eye is deficient you lack the ability to see that which is not just sitting right in front of you. Even when brilliant possibilities exist you refuse to see them. If this one is in excess you are so caught up in the siren song of your ideas that you lack the force of will to bring them into manifestation.

The Crown Chakra

This is the link to your soul. To that which is more than your current manifestation. That which is universal, profound, and more than you. When this Chakra is deficient you lack the awe and wonder of the universe. You feel that this life, this body, your mind are all that exist and will ever exist and when you die that is it…no more…hardly a point to the whole thing anyway. You are probably prone to depression. If you have excess in this chakra you are so lost in your spiritual quests that you neglect the reason for this particular earthly manifestation. You neglect the other chakras and reject your own earthly hero’s journey to check out in to a different plane. This chakra is a power cord to the universe. It is a balance between the grounding of the earth and the universal charge. When this connection is completely severed the body ceases to be animated as the power that was running it is gone and you die. Think of it like a wireless charger for your phone. Only this chakra animates your body from a universal source of energy.

The Chakras and Manifestation

Now remember the analogy of the washing machine going nuts? Think of the chakras as a manifestation tube. The Crown Chakra gives you the energy and the inspiration, the 3rd eye helps you shape the concept and refine it. The throat chakra helps you to bring it to an earthly plane by explaining it and helping others to understand your vision. The heart chakra protects others from negative effects of your creation and keeps you in a position of service to the greater good. The solar plexus chakra gives you the personal power to bring the concept into reality. The sacral chakra fleshes the idea out bringing the emotional content that will allow others who need what you are creating to connect with it. The base chakra actually brings the idea in to manifestation, in to grounded fleshed out reality.
This is the path of pure creation.

When the chakras are out of alignment in a person this shite can go horribly wrong. Atom bomb wrong. Wars, abuse, earth eating oppression, and Monsanto wrong. At any point along the manifestation tube your pure vision and intention can get polluted and spray off in a direction that will not necessarily end well. Or at very least what you are working so hard to create will simply not effectively impact the desired audience. Sometimes it just fizzles to nothing.

Manifesting when the tube has sections out of alignment brings a difficult journey through the gauntlet and usually a mucked up end result. By aligning our chakras, studying ourselves, and clearing our personal blocks, we allow the manifestation tube to bring unadulterated creations to life. My objective with the Block and Flow Exhibition: An Inner World Tour is to help as many people as possible identify where they may or may not be in alignment and then give them resources to help them bring themselves back into balance so that they can bring their beauty fully realized to the earth.

I believe it is the only hope for our planet.
So I need help creating and getting this work to as many people as possible.
That is why I need your help in bringing this to life.
Can Art help save the world?
We will not know until we try.
